What is a citation?

Citation means the reference name of a reported judgment. Now the question arises that what is a reported judgment? A reported judgment is the one which has a new proposition of law decided by an superior court. Generally the decisions of High Court and Supreme Court are the ones that become citations. The reason is that they are the authorities that can report judgments. Citations are also called as reported judgments or authorities. In some countries even the cases of first appellate courts are reported. Similarly in some countries the decisions of district courts are reported. A citation usually is written like that : 2010 MLD 1632, 1983 SCMR 1613, 2012 IHC 26. There is a year in the citation followed by the short name of digest in which the judgment is published and the page number. Lawyers and judges can read such citation within minutes as they are familiar with these.
