Fake Bank Accounts Case
PLJ 2019 SC (Cr.C.) 71 · Supreme Court of Pakistan
This Supreme Court case deals with the "Fake Bank Accounts" scandal, in which the Court took up the matter on its own initiative (suo motu) under Article 184(3) of the Constitution after reports surfaced of numerous fictitious bank accounts allegedly used for money laundering, bribes, kickbacks, and other illegal financial dealings involving large sums of money.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) identified individuals and companies, including the Omni Group, linked to these accounts. A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was formed because specialized expertise in banking, corporate transactions, and cyber-tracing of funds was needed—expertise the FIA alone lacked. The JIT's investigation implicated several high-profile individuals, including Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Murad Ali Shah, whose names were placed on the Exit Control List, along with others like Hussain Lawai, who was arrested.
The Court found that the funds had been layered through fake accounts to hide the real beneficiaries and legitimize questionable money. It ruled that the JIT's full report and evidence should be sent to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for formal legal action under accountability laws. The Court also directed that unfinished parts of the investigation continue, that NAB conduct any further probes within two months, and that resulting references be filed in accountability courts in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, with progress monitored by the Court.
This judgment is significant because it triggered one of Pakistan's most high-prof
